Q3 Pitstop: The Kdramas of 2016

Let the good dramas roll! 2016 is proving to be a strong drama year in the land of K-entertainment, continuing its streak with a bunch of summer dramas – anticipated hits and pleasant surprises alike – that captivated the audience. And with all these shows airing simultaneously, the battle for viewership got much more heated. Whichever side you’re on, all is fair in ratings war.

I especially loved the cable dramas that came out this year, thanks to their fresh content and hard-hitting themes. tvN continues to rock my world, and I found new favorites from OCN and JTBC. The main networks had some treasures too.

I was supposed to wrap up these dramas by yearend (like what I did in my midyear review), but I realized my list has gone a bit too long, and I found myself having a lot more to say about this batch. So I’m dividing the second half of the year and give you now a rundown of the dramas completed within July to September 2016.

‘Reply’ Series Tribute: My ‘Reply’ Awards

Fans tend to ask each other which is best among the three; but it’s almost unfair to choose one absolute favorite as they all have their own strong points. Not all dramas are created equal, even if they were written and directed by the same people. And since there’s the tvN10 Awards next month, I was inspired to create my own “Reply Awards”, to acknowledge the strengths of each season – at least in my opinion.

On My Drama Radar: What I’m Currently Watching

Dramaland continues to churn out interesting productions this summer; it’s going to be a challenge to keep up. One show ending (e.g. Another Oh Hae Young) means three other more will pop up and grab a share of your drama time.

Every now and then I shall share my current watch list, along with my thoughts on them mid-series. Most of them will be ongoing series, but there may be an old drama or two that I’d pick up or revisit.

Midyear Roundup: Kdramas of 2016

The first half of 2016 is coming to an end, and so far so good in the land of dramas, bringing in a diverse set of solid productions. Some were comeback shows of our favorite actors, while others introduce us to new actors to watch out for.

While mega-hit Descendants of the Sun pretty much secured the limelight all to itself, there are other productions this year that are worth the attention (in one way or another). Here are some of the noteworthy dramas I followed that were completed between January 1st and June 30th, 2016.
